Post-Bariatric Body Contouring

What is post-bariatric body contouring?
Obesity is a common health problem today, which leads to other diseases and severely reduces the patient’s quality of life. Obesity is observed more in developed countries. It is treatable but it needs an inter-disciplinary approach for that. When patients finally overcome obesity with dietary programs, or with the help of a dietician and medical treatments, or through bariatric surgeries; they need plastic surgeons to deal with the final stage of treatment which directly affects their psychology, and to start a brand new life with a brand new body.
There might be many changes in the patient’s body after excessive weight loss.
Face and neck might become loose and droopy
Upper arms might become loose and droopy
Breasts might become loose and droopy, nipples might point downwards
There might be folding in the abdomen and back, there might be pear-shaped downwards enlargement
There might be folding, sagginess and bagginess in the hips, groins and thighs
Post-bariatric body shaping is intended to deal with all these problems in an organized and combined way to help the patients start a brand new life with a brand new body.

Who undergoes post-bariatric body contouring?
Patients who have lost enough weight to  reach their desired weight and have stayed at that weight for minimum six months, who have no conditions to prevent them from having surgery of receiving anaesthesia, who have realistic expectations following the operations and who would like to sustain a healthy life in the future can undergo these operations.

What should be done prior to surgery?
As in all plastic surgeries, the patient should quit smoking minimum two weeks prior to the operation and should also avoid smoking for two weeks after the operation. Anticoagulant drugs, such as Aspirin etc. should be quitted minimum 10 days before the operation. The patient should discontinue any other medication or dietary supplement (medication that include Ginseng, CoQ, Gingko Bloba etc.) 1 week before the surgery. The patient should also disclose any other significant condition to their surgeon.

What is the surgery technique?
Post-bariatric body shaping surgeries are custom-designed for the patient. Every patient might have different needs. Planning is made depending on the patients’ needs. It is not possible to treat all deformities in a single session; that might be dangerous, as well. Thus; body shaping surgeries must be carried out by experienced plastic surgeons. Proper combinations are formed at ideal times to suit the needs of the patients. The patient should be patient and stick to the plan in the meantime. The plastic surgeon decides the safest and the most appropriate method. Surgeries are carried out under general anaesthesia in a general hospital. Duration of the operations change depending on the combinations. Facial lift, breast tightening, mastopexy, arm lift, abdomen-waist and back lift, buttocks lift-filling and leg lift operations are combined as needed. Sufficient time for healing is given between sessions. Sometimes, post-surgery revision operations might be necessary.

What to expect after post-bariatric body contouring:
After the operations, patients are hospitalized for a day or two. Patients are advised to wear suitable girdle depending on the procedures. They can generally have a bath on the third day. Pain can be taken under control using simple pain killers. Sometimes, patients might need to wear the girdles for a longer time. All these details are guided by your doctor. Necessary healing time is given after the operations to prepare the patient ready for the following sessions. One should keep in mind that there might be scarring after the surgeries. Incision marks might need to be long to get maximum benefit from surgeries. On the other hand, almost all of these marks are concealed within the bikini area. Marks on the arms and the legs are concealed in the inner parts of these limbs. While the marks will become less visible in time, they are permanent.
