Gynecomastia (Male Breast Surgery)

What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a non-desirable breast growth in men. It might occur due to hormonal disorders, side effects of some drugs or for no specific reason. Temporary physiological gynecomastia might occur during babyhood, adolescence or senescence due to hormonal changes.
Who undergoes gynecomastia operation?
The operation can be applied on patients who have no underlying reasons for the problem, who have completed their adolescence stage and have no regression in their complaints for the last 1 year.
What should be done prior to surgery?
As in all plastic surgeries, the patient should quit smoking minimum two weeks prior to the operation and should also avoid smoking for two weeks after the operation. Anticoagulant drugs, such as Aspirin etc. should be quitted minimum 10 days before the operation. The patient should discontinue any other medication or dietary supplement (medication that include Ginseng, CoQ, Gingko Bloba etc.) 1 week before the surgery. The patient should also disclose any other significant condition to their surgeon.
What is the surgery technique?
The operation takes 1 to 2 hours under general anaesthesia. There might be excessive fat accumulation in breasts, or breast gland tissue besides fat accumulation. If there is fat accumulation exclusively, liposuction is performed through 0,5 cm long incisions under the breast. If there is also breast gland tissue to be removed, an additional 1 cm long incision is made under the nipple to take these glands out. It is advised to use a supporting corset after the operation.
What to expect after gynecomasty:
Patients can be released from the hospital the day after the operation. A supporting corset is advised to be worn day and night for at least 3 weeks. Patients can have a bath after the second day. They can resume their works at the end of the third day. There might be slight bruising and/or swelling in some areas. It might take up to 3 weeks for these complaints to get relieved. Patients should avoid sports activities forcing their arms for the first 1,5 months.
